Sanitary Sewer

The City of Chilliwack’s Sanitary Sewer System collects wastewater from throughout the City and brings it to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for processing and disposal. The WWTP is designed for the maximum daily flow to be 80,700m3 per day, currently our average daily discharge is 22,430m3 per day. The wastewater that flows through the Sanitary Sewer System is a combination of used water that comes from residential, industrial, commercial and institutional properties that are connected to the sanitary system. Treating wastewater helps protect the human health, the environment and aquatic life. The City of Chilliwack Regulates the Sanitary Sewer through the Sanitary Sewer System Regulation Bylaw No. 3702, 2010.

What Can't go down the drain?

The Sanitary Sewer System Regulation Bylaw 2010, No. 3072 identifies the specific wastes that are prohibited and restricted from being discharged into the sanitary sewer system. Hazardous wastes should never be disposed of down the drain. You can find further information on disposal options for hazardous waste on the Recycle Council of BC Website or attend the City of Chilliwack’s annual household hazardous waste day (generally held in the Fall).

The BC Medications Return Program provides detailed information on where to properly dispose of unused pharmaceuticals and medications.

Remember the three p’s when you flush anything down the drain – pee, poo and (toilet) paper!
